KEEPING IT TOGETHER AT HOME FOLLOWING A HURRICANE or other disaster...
Parents & caring adults can make a huge difference in a young person's life.
Our children and youth have specific needs from us when life is disrupted by
hurricanes or other kinds of grief and loss. There four keys that can help
you stabilize your family, comfort your children and build resiliency in
youth:
1. Caring Conversation: Take time to listen! Your children and youth
have a different point of view that they need to share with you. They are
trying to make sense out of the chaos in life and need to voice their fears,
thoughts, ideas and hopes. This is a great time to wonder about faith
questions. They may be asking "why God sent the hurricane" or "why one
house is messed up and the next house is not." It is more important to
have time to listen than it is to have all the answers.
2. Rituals & Traditions: Are their bedtime rituals or family
traditions that you can do, even now, that will provide comfort and security
for little ones? Are there new traditions that need to begin right now?
Meaningful things like meal time prayers or silly things like family jokes
mean more than you think.
3. Service: Chances are your family is helping others and being helped
by others right now. This is a good time to notice how interdependent we
are on each other.
4. Devotions: If your family has never read the Bible or prayed
together, this is a great time to start. See below for a resource to help
you practice your faith in new ways.

Starters, How to ask Good Questions and Ways to Show Young People that you

THRU JESUS' EYES: LYO JR. HIGH GATHERING (November 21-23)
Too many things separate us from each other as human beings - skin color,
clothes we wear, money, gender - but Jesus brings us together as one body.
In the book of Acts, we see Jesus' disciples are pushed into some
uncomfortable situations that surprisingly bring about the imagination of a
new church - a church of people no longer separated but where all are loved
by God! At the LYO Jr. High Gathering this year, we will participate in
some large service projects on Saturday, jam to the awesome music of Glenn
Green, and grow in our faith through Bible study and speaker time led by
Sunitha Mortha from ELCA Global Missions.
