Please watch the ABC Television Network this fall for a "Davey and
Goliath" documentary produced by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA)
This program is presented through the National Council of Churches (NCC)
and the Interfaith Broadcast Commission (IBC).
The program is titled, "Oh Davey".the history of the Davey and Goliath
television series." It will begin airing across the country beginning
Sept. 14, 2003. (Please check local listing for dates and times.)
This one-hour documentary will showcase the development of "Davey and
Goliath," the stop-motion animation children's program created for the
Lutheran church by Clokey Productions between 1960 through 1975. It
will feature original clips of "Davey and Goliath," as well as
interviews with the original animator and creators, Art and Ruth Clokey.
Other interviews will include Richard Sutcliffe, the original executive
producer of the series and R. Marshall Stross, former director of the
Commission on Press. The program will highlight how stop-motion
animation is created and will also include the development of
characters, photos, storyboards, scripts, commercials and public service
announcements as well as insight on new productions. Others appearing in
the program are the ELCA's executive producers for new productions, Eric
Shafer and Kristi Bangert, as well as producers and animators involved
in the production of a new holiday special being created by the Clokey
Productions Studio.
The documentary will be hosted by Clifton Davis and Mary McDonough.
Davis is best known for his roles on the hit network television sitcoms,
"That's My Mama" and "Amen." On the set of "Amen" he played a minister.
Later, this actor, producer, singer, songwriter became an ordained
minister of the Seventh Day Adventist church. He also wrote the Jackson
Five's Grammy-nominated song, "Never Can Say Goodbye." Davis has
appeared in feature films such as "Any Given Sunday," "Kingdom Come,"
and Spike Lee's "Crooklyn." McDonough is best remembered for her role
as Erin on the highly acclaimed show, "The Waltons" a role she played
when she was just 10 years old. Most recently, Mary McDonough has
appeared on "West Wing," "ER," "Will and Grace" and "Ally McBeal."
McDonough is also a director and has received awards and recognition for
her short film, "For The Love of May." She is the national spokesperson
for Lupus LA, a foundation she has been very active with since being
diagnosed with lupus. She is also a member of the advisory board of the
National Center for Policy Research (CPR) for Women and Families.
This documentary promises to highlight the richness, diversity and
quality of "Davey and Goliath" for children and adults. Fans will learn
about progress and new programs for a new generation of "Davey and
Goliath" viewers.
The producer for this project is Ava Odom Martin, broadcast media
production manager for the ELCA. The studio portions will be done by
Post Effects 3D virtual studio in Chicago.
