Synodical Rostered Leaders,
Today you should have received an email from the ELCA Secretary, David
Swartling, about the new web based Churchwide mobility database for rostered
leaders. It is - at long last - up and running. We give thanks to God for
our colleague in NT-NL, Pastor Stan Meyer, who has worked long and hard on
this; and who continues to help work out the "bugs."
As of June 1st the old mobility forms have gone away. I now encourage all
of you that have previously submitted a Mobility Profile (the old
form/format) to resubmit your mobility information and wishes using the new
Rostered Leader Profile (RLP) that is downloadable from the ELCA website.
http://www.elca.org/call Even if you filled out the RLP during the beta
testing period, download the final RLP version, complete it, and resubmit it
through the ELCA web portal. (I will purge our files of old hard copy
mobility papers as of September 1, 2009.)
When creating your account or submitting any documents, you must use your
"Leader Key." This key # is on the last clergy card that you received.
The new RLP form is also in Formatta so you can cut and paste from previous
forms (when applicable) if you want; however, after almost two year of
reading Mobility Profiles, I have some suggestions.
. Write creatively and provocatively. We have all read things that
we "want to read" and things that we "have to read." For Call Committees,
try to have your RLP be a "want to."
. Have your writing communicate who you are; not just what you
think. I believe it is better to write in a "conversational" rather than an
"academic" style.
. Your RLP should have some "edge" to it. In our synod, I usually
submit at least six candidate profiles to a Call Committee. How can you
make yours "pop?"
. On the RLP you are asked if you can provide audio or video of
yourself, samples of writing, letters of reference, curriculum vitae, and
other materials. You should have these things ready, recent, and of high
quality.
When you download the RLP, you will notice that the "Visions and
Expectations" questions and answers, that used to be in the "Bishop's
Section" of the old Mobility Forms, are now provided to Call Committees as a
matter of course. The ELCA is in "full disclosure mode" with regard to its
rostered leadership.
Thanks for reading! I think that this new format will go a long ways to
increasing and easing mobility throughout the ELCA. If you have any
questions, drop me a note: don at gulfcoastsynod.org
In Christ,
Don
